Communication fails

Today I had an interesting conversation with a Pizza Chef. He's looking for a new position because he has trouble with public transport. It is taking him sometimes 2 hours to get home in the evening.
This made me think.
Do employees and employers really communicate on a meaningful level. Shouldn't this person before even start looking for a job, try to find a compromise with the current employer?
I am sure in the current climate employers will be more willing than ever to find solutions. Maybe this employer will be willing to offer to pay for a taxi (or part of the fee) So that transport can be cut to a reasonable time.
In the current climate pizzaioli have a lot leveraging when it comes to negotiating. Every recruiter is finding it difficult to find staff and employers will be desperate for you to stay. We know salaries can only go so far, but there are other perks that are more tax efficient that employers will be willing to help with, namely transport, professional or language courses, new equipment etc.
So if there is anything that could make your job more enjoyable/easier, before looking elsewhere, seat down and have a chat, you may be surprised.
